Fumerie will be holding an event dedicated to smelling, sharing and discussing vintage fragrances. This will be a more casual, social-style event, that will be moderated by Fumerie. We will be offering more tickets than we normally would, and ask that you plan to have your visit last roughly one hour as the capacity of our shop cannot accommodate all ticket holders at one time.

We will be giving you the opportunity to request any specific vintage fragrances you’ve always been curious to try in addition to those we curate for the event, and those we can provide we will! Additionally, if you are a collector yourself, we invite you to bring in any vintage fragrances you would like to share with those who attend the event. Protocols will be put in place to make sure those you share with are respectful of how you would prefer to share your discontinued fragrance.

Details on how to submit fragrances to share, how to request specific fragrances, and how the event will be organized will be shared with ticket holders once all tickets have been claimed. We expect this event to reach capacity quickly, so make sure to snag a ticket while you can!

Join us on Sunday, May 19th from 4:30-7 pm, for an exciting evening of smelling, sharing and discussing vintage favorites!

Fragrance Swap Nº10

Fragrance Swap Nº10

Fragrance Swap Nº10

We are beyond thrilled to announce our tenth Fragrance Swap here at Fumerie Parfumerie! Join us on Sunday March 24th from 4:30-6:30pm to meet fellow fragrance lovers for conversation, the opportunity to explore new scents, and maybe even leave with something for yourself!

As with all of our previous Swaps, attendance will be limited as will the amount of bottles individual attendees can bring. If for some reason you find that tickets have sold out and you would like to attend, please use our Waiting List link on the ticket page to add yourself! Most Waiting List requests result in attendance, so don’t talk yourself out of using it! In the spirit of sharing this info we have updated the information on this page to address a few FAQs about how our Swaps work. We hope to see you there!

What fragrances/ products qualify for the Swap?
Any perfume in it’s original bottle can be brought to the Swap to be traded! Bottles do not need to be full (and can even be very low on juice) or have boxes as long as they are in their original bottle; no decants, samples, travel size/ sample sets, soaps, body oils/ lotions, or other non-perfumes are eligible for our Swaps. Alcohol and oil based perfumes are all we trade here at our Fumerie Fragrance Swaps.

How much does a ticket to the Swap cost?
Attendance to our Swaps are always free! Tickets are limited, but we offer this service as a conduit for the experience and as a meeting opportunity for members of the wonderful fragrance community we are so proud to be a part of!

Do my fragrances need to be niche/ independent? Do I need to have purchased my fragrances at Fumerie?
Of course not- we don’t stick our noses up at any fragrance or taste preferences and neither does our community! The rubrics of our curation and the focus of our shop do not represent a wider opinion of all the wonderful things that can be found in the world, and the sleeper hits that can be found anywhere! Swaps are always more fun when there is a more eclectic variety of fragrances at them!

If tickets are “sold out” and I still want to join should I join the Waiting List?
Without a doubt. Using the Waiting List results in a high chance of attendance, and not using it results it none!

Barbara Herman • Eris Parfums Founder & Scent and Subversion Author

We are honored to welcome and host Barbara Herman here at Fumerie on Saturday, August 5th for an evening of lively discussion and presentation on her vintage-inspired brand, her indispensable book, and more!

Eris Perfumes was launched in 2016 by vintage perfume lover Barbara Herman. Her years of collecting and researching vintage perfume took her on a journey that started with her blog, Yesterday’s Perfume, which turned into a book, Scent and Subversion: Decoding a Century of Provocative Perfume.

After interviewing Master Perfumer Antoine Lie for Scent and Subversion, Barbara asked him to help her create a collection of fragrances as bold as her favorite vintage perfumes but for a modern audience.

Named after Eris, the Greek goddess of troublemaking and disruption, Eris Parfums is inspired by muses — divine, human, and fragrant — that exemplify unconventional beauty and subversive glamour.

Join us for one of two one-hour events on August 5th with Barbara. If you find that tickets for this event are sold out and are still interested in attending please email info@fumerie.com to be put on our Waiting List. Catherine Haley Epstein • My Nose Made Me Do It: reframing scent in service of creativity

Join us Thursday, June 15 us as we welcome back local perfumer, author, artist, and provocateur Catherine Haley Epstein for a night of scent exploration and discussion around the principle concepts of her book Nose Dive. We don't want to give too much away, but we will say- get ready to go outside the box with how you think about your sense of smell!

Catherine Haley Epstein is an artist and writer who began creating olfactory work in 2011. Her work has been favorably reviewed by Luca Turin, and she has been a panelist on American Perfumery at Esxence in Milan, Italy.  Catherine published the book Nose Dive in 2017 as an invitation to use scent in creative practices. She founded the Odorbet in 2020 and continues to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects involving scent through Mindmarrow®.  She founded Carnet® in 2020 to house her candles, perfumes, and apothecary for purchase by the general public. Catherine is a member of the Perfumery Code of Ethics, and supports the movement of creativity, trust, and respect in perfumery. Catherine sees scent as the serious nuance and play missing so deeply from the collective conscience.

Catherine's book Nose Dive is a broad introduction to olfactory culture meant for artists or anyone curious about the power of scent. Something is in the air with respect to our most powerful and least regarded sense. This book demystifies the world of scent, provides springboards for further study, and presents exercises for shifting gears with your nose. A must-read for anyone intrigued by the superpower right under our noses.

Join us for one of two one-hour events on June 15th with Catherine Haley Epstein. If you find that tickets for this event are sold out and are still interested in attending please email info@fumerie.com to be put on our Waiting List. In the event of cancellations or space opening up, you will be contacted to attend.

An Evening with Meo Fusciuni

An Evening with Meo Fusciuni

We are beyond thrilled to welcome Meo Fusciuni all the way from Italy for an in-person event at our Boutique in Portland, Oregon on Tuesday May 16th, 2023.

Meo Fusciuni’s work was first launched here at Fumerie in 2022 and has quickly become a favorite amongst our Pacific Northwest community, as well those who visit our shop from abroad. Meo’s vulnerable and inspired work seems to speak directly to those looking for depth and intrigue in their fragrances of choice, as well as those looking for respite through comforting compositions.

Giuseppe Imprezzabile is a chemist with a passion for the poetry of Pablo Neruda, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Juana Ines de la Cruz. He owned an herbalist’s shop in the north Italian town of Salsomaggiore Terme until his passion for words and the evocative power of fragrances turned into a dream-job. He started to create fragrances under the epithet Meo Fusciuni, a family nickname from his native Sicily - Meo was his father's diminutive and Fusciuni means flowing in Sicilian, the word his grandfather used to describe him.

Meo Fusciuni released his first independent perfumes in 2010 with the Trilogy of Travel: known in-store as the numbered series of eau de parfums. The herb garden fragrances that recall moments of life lived through the odors, and retrace their path of perfume through Turkey to Morocco and his native Sicily, a unique and exciting collection- the olfactory vision of a modern artist and nomad.

In 2012 and 2013 he completed a new cycle, that of poetry, which lead Meo Fusciuni to live in olfactory pyramids and architecture; the poetic inner life of a researcher. Compounds from natural essential oils and raw materials of high quality, the scents of Meo Fusciuni rediscover the charm and tradition of the art of perfumery with bold new direction. Over the years Meo Fusciuni’s brand has established itself as an independent brand in the world of perfumery that is a beacon of the celebration of the most artistic elements of the medium.

”My path is decidedly atypical for a perfumer . Chemist and Herbalist , I have lived my youth with plants, places of silence, where nature expresses its utmost essence. The human experience of anthropology and ethnobotany in Morocco and Turkey have developed into following my passion for the Arab world . Hence the love for aromatherapy and almost involuntary step into the world of fragrances. Before the pyramid or poetry, the smell- this is my thought, the smell of the perfume before the first poem of the molecule. Meo Fusciuni and odorous liquid is matter that contains it, the poetic language that is enclosed in a fragrance, a journey that lasts a lifetime. For me perfume is an art, a way to revive the emotions and sensations experienced; so you do not merely wear a perfume, but are a means to identify an expression of art.” - Meo Fusciuni

Join us for one of two one-hour events on May 16th with Meo Fusciuni, where he will guide us through some of his fragrant art and answer your questions. If you find that tickets for this event are sold out and are still interested in attending please email info@fumerie.com to be put on our Waiting List. In the event of cancellations or space opening up you will be contacted to attend.

This event has reached capacity.

We are so thrilled to welcome back award-winning author and perfume critic Luca Turin to Fumerie this December. Turin was educated in France, Italy and the United Kingdom and holds a PhD in Biophysics from the University of London. His academic accomplishments notwithstanding, Turin is perhaps best known for co-authoring a series of perfume guides with his wife Tania Sanchez. Turin has established himself as one of the world’s foremost fragrance critics.

His writing has ushered in a new era of fragrance criticism and helped to popularize the notion that perfumery is a serious form of artistic expression. His published work includes the original Parfums: le guide (in French); The Secret of Scent: Adventures of Perfume and the Science of Smell; Perfumes: The A-Z Guide, The Little Book of Perfumes: The Hundred Classics, and Perfumes: The Guide 2018 with Tania Sanchez; and Folio Columns 2003-2014, a collection of his monthly features and columns for Swiss magazine NZZ Folio. His perfume writing has earned him both the Prix Jasmin (France) and the Jasmine Prize (UK). Turin currently conducts research on olfaction, anesthesia and brain disorders. He and Sanchez recently announced that they have begun work on Perfumes: The Guide 2019.

Notes Nº 7: Gourmands in Fragrance

Notes Nº7: Gourmands in Fragrance

A gourmand fragrance is a perfume that evokes edible notes such as chocolate, caramel, almonds, or candy. Although gourmand notes in perfume can be found as far back in history as 1916, when Parfums de Rosine celebrated the sweetness of a banana sundae in their fragrance Le Fruit Défendu, it was the early 1990s that solidified the popularity of this fragrance family. Theirry Mugler's fragrance Angel, was hugely popular due to the use of ethyl maltol (which conjures mouthwatering sugary caramel facets) combined with vanilla and patchouli. These days, perfumers have expanded this genre to include creations that summon Turkish delight, delicious pastries, and chocolate truffles.

Join us on Saturday, May 18th from 6-8pm, to celebrate this enticing world of olfactory delights.  Nicole Amzallag-Divine will lead the evening's event with her usual wit and charisma.

Spotlight: Nez and the Changing Landscape of Fragrance Discourse

nez-event-01.png

Join us on December 13 as we dive into Nez, the olfactive magazine that has taken the fragrance world by storm. Since launching in 2016, Nez has expanded into three languages and garnered a reputation for its thoughtful writing and iconic design. Headed by the enigmatic Jeanne Doré, Nez was launched during a period of decline in the perfume writing ecosystem.

By 2016, the number of active perfume blogs had dropped precipitously and many of the remaining blogs had shifted away from an exclusive focus on perfume. In some cases, blogs were shuttered due to book deals (Barbara Herman’s Yesterday’s Perfume, for instance) but many others struggled with an increasingly fragmented audience, competition from YouTube reviewers and the difficulty of monetizing a perfume blog.

The other night, Luca Turin pointed out that perfumery is the only art form that isn’t covered by the New York Times. The ongoing battle to have perfumery recognized as a legitimate art form is currently being fought by authors, bloggers and critics—that is to say that the fate of perfumery’s cultural status is entirely dependent upon the survival of perfume criticism and critical discourse. Luckily, Nez has been taking this mission very seriously:

Online perfume reviews have shaken up the industry in the last decade and shown that alongside literary, film and music critics there is also a place for the perfume critic. Nez will be the first print publication to take on this critical dimension (and it gets very critical!). With the whole journal dedicated to the subject, each issue offers a unique focus shaped by the particular specialisms [sic] of the contributors.

For this event, we will be joined by Nez contributor, author, perfume critic and blogger Angela Sanders. Angela has been a regular contributor on the popular perfume website Now Smell This for years and has written several articles for Nez. She will be discussing her experience working as a perfume reviewer, her process, the way the industry has changed over the years and more.

An Evening with Luca Turin (Late Event)

“Perfume is, among other things, the most portable form of intelligence.”

Luca Turin

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome award-winning author and perfume critic Luca Turin to Fumerie this November. Born in Beirut in 1953, Turin was educated in France, Italy and the United Kingdom and holds a PhD in Biophysics from the University of London. His academic accomplishments notwithstanding, Turin is perhaps best known for co-authoring a series of perfume guides with his wife Tania Sanchez. Growing up in Europe, Turin was surrounded by fragrance all his life but his passion for perfume was ignited in the early eighties by a chance encounter with a now iconic fragrance in a Niçois perfume boutique. It was in this boutique off the Galeries Lafayette that Turin’s eye was drawn to a shiny black arch. In The Secret of Scent: Adventures of Perfume and the Science of Smell, Turin recalls the encounter:

This was the brand-new walk-in stand for a Japanese company I’d never heard of called Shiseido, and it showcased their first ‘western’ fragrance: Nombre Noir. I still remember the black-clad sales attendant spraying it from a black glass octagonal sampler onto my hand.

The fragrance itself was, and still is, a radical surprise. A perfume, like the timbre of a voice, can say something quite independent of the words actually spoken. What Nombre Noir said was ‘flower’. But the way it said it was an epiphany. The flower at the core of Nombre Noir was half-way between a rose and a violet, but without a trace of the sweetness of either, set instead against an austere, almost saintly background of cigar-box cedar notes. At the same time, it wasn’t dry, and seemed to be glistening with a liquid freshness that made its deep colors glow like a stained-glass window.

The voice of Nombre Noir was that of a child older than its years, at once fresh, husky, modulated and faintly capricious. There was a knowing naïvety about it which made me think of Colette’s writing style in her Claudine books. It brought to mind a purple ink to write love letters with, and that wonderful French word farouche, which can mean either shy or fierce or a bit of both. I immediately bought a very expensive half-ounce in a little square black bottle. It bore the initials SL for a mysterious name: ‘Serge Lutens’. A few months later my girlfriend took it with her when we parted, and soon after the fragrance was discontinued. Little did I know at the time that I would have to wait twenty years before smelling it again.

I had always liked perfumes, but this was love.

In the time since, Turin has established himself as one of the world’s foremost fragrance critics.

Due to overwhelming interest, we have restructured this event and added one additional date. Participants who signed up for the Friday event have been divided into two groups—one group will attend the early event while the other group will attend the late event. Both Friday events remain at capacity.

An Evening with Luca Turin (Late Event) will take place on Friday, November 30, 2018. The event will begin promptly at 7:00 PM and conclude at 8:15 PM. Copies of Perfumes: The Guide 2018 will be available for purchase at the event. Specific details are forthcoming.

Fumerie Fragrance Swap 6

Fumerie Fragrance Swap 6

Fumerie Fragrance Swap 6 will take place on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at our boutique on SE Division Street. For the uninitiated, the idea behind fragrance swaps is very simple: you bring fragrances that you would like to trade and then you trade with other attendees at the event. We do have some rules, but they're pretty straightforward and ultimately intended to make the experience fun and rewarding for everyone.

This event is free and open to anyone who is interested in participating. All you have to do is bring at least one fragrance that adheres to our guidelines. If you haven't had a chance to participate, let me take this opportunity to address a common misconception about these swaps: they are in no way niche-only. Many customers I have spoken with over the past few years have expressed reservations about attending because they feel that their fragrances are not "good enough." Well, let me disabuse everyone of that notion. The whole idea is that if you love something, it doesn't matter if it's a widely-available blockbuster or an ultra-rare limited edition fragrance. You can never predict what will happen or what someone may be looking for. The bottom line is these events are a lot of fun and full of surprises. We invite you to bring whatever you have and see what happens.

In order to attend you must sign up below and you must bring at least one fragrance to swap. All fragrances must adhere to the guidelines below. Please make sure to read all of the rules before signing up. Fragrances that do not adhere to our guidelines are expressly prohibited.

EVENT GUIDELINES

First and foremost, this is a functionally independent event hosted by Fumerie Parfumerie. The event will be taking place at Fumerie Parfumerie's boutique on SE Division Street and moderated by Tracy Tsefalas and André Gooren. One of our goals is to serve as a meeting place for fragrance enthusiasts and the boutique will be functioning as a venue for this event to that end.

Participants must sign up below in order to attend. Each participant will be assigned a clearly marked and delineated space to display their fragrances. We ask that you submit a complete list of the fragrances that you plan to bring so that we can prepare. Due to the nature of the event, if you find out that you will be unable to attend after registering, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can plan accordingly.

On the night of the event, participants will be directed to their assigned space and given a booklet of color-coded stickers. Participants will be afforded the opportunity to explore all of the available fragrances prior to the swapping portion of the event. During this time, participants will have the will be instructed to indicate their interest in a fragrance by applying their color-coded stickers to the bottles. Once the swapping portion of the event begins, Fumerie staff will proceed lot-by-lot, facilitating fragrance swaps.

In order for a swap to occur, both parties must consent to the trade. You are under no obligation to agree to a swap. If nothing at the event interests you, you are free to leave without swapping. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us.

REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS CLOSED.

Notes No. 6: Exploring Perfumery's Raw Materials

Notes No. 6: Exploring Perfumery's Raw Materials

The art of perfumery has long been shrouded in mystery. We have all heard the fantastic stories about the painstaking collection of rare ingredients and precious essences from the farthest corners of the world. In films and documentaries, we have witnessed the slow and miraculous transformation of these essences into oils as workers tend to large copper stills in rustic labs deep in the bucolic French countryside. This romantic view of the perfume industry reflects a world that has long since disappeared and yet perfume houses perpetuate this idyllic worldview leading to an increasing disconnect between customer expectations and reality.

citrus-01.jpg

The truth is that the modern fragrance industry is sophisticated, complex and cosmopolitan. The birth of modern perfume industry dates back to the mid-1800s and was the direct result of scientific advances that led to the discovery of synthetic routes to several expensive isolates, most notably coumarin in 1868. Fourteen years later in 1882, Paul Parquet used synthetic coumarin in Fougère Royale, marking the beginning of the era of modern perfumery.

From that point on, the history of the fragrance industry is inexorably tied to developments in fragrance chemistry with each new discovery driving the engine of progress. Synthetics provide structure and shape to fragrances while naturals provide the depth and texture. The importance of these components has been understood by perfumers for over a century with Ernest Beaux, the creator of Chanel Nº 5, remarking that, "The future of perfumery is in the hands of chemists."

To more fully understand and appreciate the fragrances that we love, we must do our best to understand the raw materials that make their existence possible. Join us on the evening of Saturday, June 9, 2018 for the sixth event in our NOTES series as we explore the many faces of citrus with Nicole Amzallag-Divine.

Citrus has been used in perfumery for thousands of years. In Historia Naturalis, Roman writer Pliny (23 CE - 79 CE) included a recipe for an early chypre containing bergamot. Citrus oils played an important role both in Eau de Hongrie in the fourteenth century and in traditional Eau de Cologne dating back to the eighteenth century. In more recent times, citrus oils have remained an important part of modern fragrances. In fact, almost every scent is liable to contain at least some citrus materials.

Any issues that may arise must be dealt with between participants. All items featured at this swap are the property of the individuals in attendance. An item's presence at the event does not constitute a relationship with the manufacturer of said item nor does it function as an endorsement of said item by Fumerie and/or Fumerie staff.

  4. Fumerie Parfumerie is not liable for the condition or authenticity of any items featured at this swap. That being said, we will do our best to ensure that all items featured at this swap are authentic and in good condition as determined by Fumerie Parfumerie staff (Tracy Tsefalas and André Gooren). As such, we reserve the right to refuse the inclusion of any fragrance on the following grounds:
  • Counterfeit items and "copycat perfumes" will not be allowed.
  • Items that have been unequivocally damaged beyond recognition will be barred from this event. We realize that vintage fragrances can "go off" and aging is normal. Each fragrance will be evaluated on its own terms by André Gooren and/or Tracy Tsefalas. Fragrances that have been damaged by light and/or heat due to improper care will not be permitted at this event.
  • Custom-made fragrances will not be permitted at this event. Exceptions will be made for bespoke fragrances created by established houses (e.g. Guerlain) or trained perfumers (e.g. Francis Kurkdjian) at the discretion of Fumerie staff.
  • Only commercially-produced fragrances will be permitted. This includes niche, artisanal and independent fragrances. Our aim is not to be exclusive but rather to ensure that all items are of a certain quality. If you have any questions or are unsure if your fragrance meets these requirements, please email us at info@fumerie.com.
  • Fragrances must be presented in their original bottles. Decants will not be permitted.
  • This event is not intended to serve as a platform for self-promotion. Fragrances offered at this event should be part of a personal fragrance collection. Vendors are not permitted to promote their lines at fragrance swaps. If you are interested in selling your fragrance line at Fumerie, please visit our Vendors page and fill out the contact form.
